During the summer we had the opportunity to partner with The Jumpstart Media Project to make a film. Each week our youth, ranging in age from 11 to 21, would head over to St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church to write, direct, and film under the guidance of Michael Mack, an experienced actor and director. On December 6 we held a screening of the film, Redemption, at our Family Center, so that family members and the community could see the excellent work that the youth accomplished.

The big, white van pulls up next to the Little Lights Center—packed full with students wearing puffy winter coats (many provided by Little Lights from caring donors) and backpacks. Mekhi, one of our smallest students, called from the van door to me, “Hi, Miss Beth!” I hadn’t seen him since I tested his phonics a few weeks ago. Running around the corner, past the center’s front door with his arms outstretched the entire time, Mekhi landed all of his weight on me, and he hugged me saying, “I miss you!” “I miss you, too!” I said, hugging him back, “Seeing you made my day!” With that, he turned and scampered up the ramp and into Homework Club, gone just as fast—and unexpectedly—as he’d arrived. We give and receive a lot of hugs here—I hope and pray Mehki and our other students will feel them and remember how treasured they are to us, and to Jesus, when they are sad, afraid, alone. . . and need it most.
Many thanks to V & S Foundation for donating funds for winter coats, food and transportation for our Christmas Party, and gift cards for parents. Thank you for your generosity and all the help you have provided Little Lights Urban Ministries!
