Academic Programs The Reading and Math Heroes program matches students one-to-one or two-to-one with a trained volunteer to improve reading and math skills using curricula that contain tutor-friendly lessons. Reading Heroes is a literacy program for students ages 5-15. Students practice and improve their reading skills based on a number of Reading Heroes activities such as reading appropriate level books, playing phonics games, and completing phonics and grammar worksheets. Research has overwhelmingly shown the single most important factor separating excellent readers from poor readers is whether or not they have a caring adult who reads with them. For middle and high school students, Little Lights offers the following workshops as part of the Reading Heroes program:
Math Heroes uses a step-by-step approach that helps children master basic skills such as addition and subtraction. Students then proceed to more difficult mathematic concepts such as negative numbers, fractions, and algebra. Students complete appropriate level worksheets, play math games, and use manipulatives to reinforce learning. Where: 5th Grade and up: Hope Center. K-4th Grade: Mount Joy Baptist Church.
