Reading and Math Heroes

The Reading and Math Heroes program matches students one-to-one or two-to-one with a trained volunteer to improve reading and math skills using curricula that contain tutor-friendly lessons.

Reading Heroes is a literacy program for students ages 5-15. Students practice and improve their reading skills based on a number of Reading Heroes activities such as reading appropriate level books, playing phonics games, and completing phonics and grammar worksheets. Research has overwhelmingly shown the single most important factor separating excellent readers from poor readers is whether or not they have a caring adult who reads with them. For middle and high school students, Little Lights offers the following workshops as part of the Reading Heroes program:

  • Literacy Through Photography (LTP): LTP uses photography to develop interest and enjoyment in creative writing. Students develop necessary writing skills as they have more opportunities to write about photographs they have taken. LTP provides a starting point for the students to "acknowledge and discuss, in their own voices," their unique identity and develop a sense of self-worth and positive self-esteem. Each class will teach a different photography concept illustrated through hands-on activities, group participation and creative writing prompts.
  • Little Lights News Network(LNN): LNN teaches the basics of TV journalism with a special emphasis on reading comprehension, good story telling, writing new script, building self esteem, and cultivating our young student stars. Lesson by lesson the students create the elements of their own reporter package while learning what is news, how to ask good questions, the difference between fact and opinion, how to write a short news script and how to appear on camera.

Math Heroes uses a step-by-step approach that helps children master basic skills such as addition and subtraction. Students then proceed to more difficult mathematic concepts such as negative numbers, fractions, and algebra. Students complete appropriate level worksheets, play math games, and use manipulatives to reinforce learning.
