Why does your group want to volunteer with Little Lights? What do you hope to get out of this service trip?

Washington, D.C. Missions

Partner with Little Lights this summer or spring break for a short-term mission trip in Washington, D.C. Your team will get hands on experience with urban ministry and outreach, living and working at spaces inside of the community. You will have the opportunity to build direct relationships with inner-city children, while learning the bigger, historical picture of systemic poverty in our nation’s capital.

Summer service and mission trips will participate in Summer Lights, a summer camp for the under-resourced youth living in the Hopkins and Potomac Gardens housing projects. Teams will help lead recreational activities, assist students with academic work, and help support the Little Lights staff.

We believe that training and education are important components to mission, especially when approaching communities and cultures that are foreign or unfamiliar. We will work with your team to give insight into holistic inner-city ministry, God’s call for social justice, and the compound challenges of poverty in a gentrifying neighborhood.

Housing is available, all team members must be 16 years or older.  College groups are encouraged.

Sample Summer Lights Schedule:

9:00am – Meet with staff workers, including founder Steve Park, for training and educational presentations.
10:00am – Arrive at separate program sites for daily preparation.
11:00am – Summer Lights camp – help oversee recreational activities like arts and crafts, physical fitness, pool time, and more. Step up and lead worship or a short Bible study lesson!
4:30pm – Summer Lights ends. Time for clean up and discussion and reflection with site team.
6:00pm – Program site dismissal and return to Little Lights Main site. The rest of the evening is left for dinner and your group reflection.

U.S. Capitol Building, White House, National Monuments, Smithsonian, Kennedy Center.


$250 per team member. Includes lodging at Little Lights Retreat House (with beds & linens, full kitchen, laundry access), orientation and training, and a Little Lights t-shirt.
